I Moved to Spain: What No One Explained to Me (A Real Checklist)

Moving to Spain sounds amazing.
Sun, beaches, great food, friendly people… and then reality hits: paperwork, appointments, confusing acronyms, and the constant feeling of “Wait… should I have done this first?”

If you’re reading this, you’re probably:

  • planning a move to Spain,

  • newly arrived,

  • or helping someone who just got here.

Let me tell you this upfront: you’re not lost — you just weren’t given the right order.

My experience (no sugarcoating)

I’ve been there too.
And while Spain is a wonderful country, no one explains the full process in a clear, human way.

I learned through:

  • mistakes,

  • missed appointments,

  • repeated paperwork,

  • and questions like:
“But didn’t I need this first?”

That’s why I’m writing this post.
And that’s why I created a real, practical checklist — not a legal document, but a guide for real people.

The first thing you need to understand

It’s not just what you do — it’s when you do it.

In Spain:

  • one step depends on another,

  • appointments can take weeks,

  • and doing things out of order can cost you months.

So here’s a preview of what actually matters:

 Before you arrive

  • Check what type of visa you need (if any)

  • Bring important documents (originals + copies)

  • Prepare a realistic budget for the first months

Once you arrive

  • Register your address (empadronamiento — more important than it sounds)

  • Secure a valid address

  • Book official appointments as soon as possible

The most common (and expensive) mistake

Thinking:

“I’ll figure it out as I go.”

In Spain, that often means:

  • visiting the same office three times,

  • losing an appointment,

  • or discovering you’re missing that one document no one mentioned.

That’s why I created a complete checklist (PDF)

What’s inside:
  • steps in the correct order,
  • important warnings,
  • practical tips,
  • and useful links.
